Coastal Duck Hunting

This isn't your typical duck hunt.

You’ll live aboard our Ocean Alexander and work the inlets around Kitimat, some of the most rugged coastal water in British Columbia. We’re hunting sea ducks here. Surf scoters, white-winged scoters, harlequin ducks, long-tailed ducks, buffleheads, and common goldeneyes. These birds spend their winters in the cold Pacific waters, diving for mussels and crabs in the wave-beaten rocks and tidal zones. They’re tough, they’re wary, and they belong to this coast. You’ll also get chances at your mallards, teals, and Canada geese.

Out here, the hunt follows the tide schedule. We’re on the water half an hour before daylight, setting up along rocky points and kelp beds where the birds feed and trade. The weather moves fast, wind, rain, mist rolling off the mountains. You’ll feel it. But that’s what makes these birds fly, and that’s what makes this hunt real.

What's Included

Everything except your shells and your license.

Accommodation: You stay on the Ocean Alexander, our floating base camp. Warm bunks, hot meals, all the seafood you can eat.

Hunting: Decoys, layout, boat transport to and from hunting sites. We work with the tides and the weather to put you where the birds are.

Meals: Fresh caught seafood, hot coffee before dawn, solid food after a cold morning on the water.

Downtime: Between tides, we fish. You might pull rockfish, lingcod, or salmon depending on the season. We keep it simple and we keep it moving.

Hot Springs Bonus: Book four days or longer and we’ll take you to the natural hot springs for a night or two. Soak in steaming water under the stars after days on the hunt. It’s worth it.

What You Need

Shotgun shells: We sell them by the box on-site.

BC hunting license: You need to purchase this ahead of time. Make sure it’s valid for migratory birds.

Your gear: Warm, waterproof layers. Neoprene waders if you’ve got them. This is cold-water hunting.

Why This Hunt Matters

Most people hunt ducks in fields or marshes. Out here, you’re hunting the coast. The birds are different, the conditions are harder, and the experience sticks with you. You’ll see mountains, glaciers, and water that looks like it hasn’t changed in ten thousand years. You’ll work for your birds. And at the end of the day, you’ll sit on the deck of that boat with a plate of fresh crab and know you earned it.

If you want comfortable, this isn’t it. If you want real, this is the hunt.
